There are hundreds, thousands even possibly millions of article now written discussing, analyzing and deciphering why the GOP lost this election and for good reason, it was theirs to lose.
Very few of us are any better off than we were 3 1/2 years ago when Obama took office. In many regards the economy is no better than it was, in some it's worse. There have been domestic and foreign issues that cast a black shadow on his promise of transparency and the Katrina like federal response to hurricane Sandy may leave many with buyer's remorse in the next few months.
There are probably as many reasons why the GOP lost as there are words to write them with. Many blame demographics, minorities, the youth vote, the women's vote, the LGBT vote and some of that holds true but in the end, it boils down to this...
The GOP, at least in the last two elections, have picked losers to run. I'm not calling them losers because they lost to Obama, rather they're losers because they lost in their own party the election before respectively. How am I going to get behind your message when the GOP itself can't? John McCain lost to Bush 2 in the 2000 primaries. Eight years later he runs again. And Romney lost in 2004 to John McCain. If he wasn't the best guy then, you're going to be hard pressed to convince me he's the best guy now and that was evidenced by the long drawn out mudslinging primary. If your goal is to lose, by all means, keep picking losers.
Voters overwhelmingly said their primary concern was the economy and despite the fact that economically today we are weaker than when he took office and despite the fact Obama has NO financial background, he was given a 2nd term. I don't think there is any other politician who could have won under these circumstances. None. I cannot believe that he somehow convinced half of this country that he was better for the economy which tells me other fringe issues persuaded even fiscal conservatives to vote for him despite the economy.
Poor people voted for Obama despite the fact they're still poor. The Jobless voted for Obama despite the fact they're still jobless. Gays voted for Obama despite no effort on his or any other democrats part to repeal DOMA or legalize gay marriage. People voted for Obama because the GOP put up a weak candidate who let personal social beliefs get in the way of the REAL issues we are concerned about.
